FAQs
Surfing
What is the difference between a session and lesson?
In a lesson, an instructor will guide you in a safe and fun manner from the beginner waves to improver waves and beyond. In a session you surf independently like you would in the ocean.
Lessons include a 30 minute on-land instruction followed by an hour in the water with an instructor.
Surf sessions last for one hour and are for surfers with previous experience who are comfortable on their board.
Is the water cold?
We have carefully picked the best 5/4mm wetsuits, boots, gloves and hoods to ensure your warmth and comfort. These are included in lessons and are available for a small fee for sessions.
In the rare occasion that the water drops below a certain temperature and we decide to postpone your surf, we will contact you and offer a full refund.
Are there changing facilities?
Yes, we have heated and accessible indoor changing rooms with lockers, showers and hair dryers located in our changing area.
Are there lifeguards?
Yes, we will have fully qualified lifeguards on duty when the Cove is operational. Our surf instructors and coaches are also qualified in all aspects of water safety.
Do I need to be able to swim?
Yes, you need to be able to swim at least 25 metres unaided. We strongly recommend that all participants taking part in an activity must be water confident too.
What is the minimum age?
7 – Children under the age of 7 years old will not be permitted in the Cove.
Do I need to bring a wetsuit?
If you’re coming for lesson, we will provide you with high quality 5/4mm wetsuits, boots, gloves, and a hood.
If you’re coming for a session, an £8 fee will apply to rental of the above items. This charge does not apply to guests staying in our accommodation or those attending Surfing Weekends.
You are more than welcome to bring your own wetsuit if you would like to. If your suit does not meet our safety standards, (including thickness during winter) you may be requested to wear one of ours.
Do I need to have surfing experience?
No, we welcome all levels of surfers even those that have never surfed before! Our ISA qualified instructors will help you learn and progress and will ensure that you have a lot of fun doing so.
How many surfers are in a lesson or session?
The number of surfers in a lesson will be a maximum of 8 surfers per instructor. The number of surfers in a session will vary depending on the session. We will always ensure that we are providing a safe, fun and pressure free experience.
Can I use my own board?
We have a range of softboards that are free to use and a variety of higher performance boards that are available to rent. Click here to view our rental boards.
