The Surf Lab

Lost Shore Surf Resort aims to become a hub for research and development in surfing. That is why The Surf Lab, a partnership between Lost Shore and Edinburgh Napier University, was created. It is the first research facility globally which focusses on all aspects of surfing, in areas such as performance and product design, along with the broader area of health and wellbeing.

This applied research lab will act as a hub to fast track robust and impactful research, making the most of the uniquely controllable environment of Lost Shore’s wave pool. Priority areas already identified include surf therapy, high performance surfing, adaptive surfing, and equipment research and development.

The Surf Lab has two different spaces on site, one to enable university researchers to have a fixed base in Europe’s biggest wave pool to conduct their studies, and another, located in the Hub building, to offer innovative services and opportunities to customers, students, and pro athletes.

The importance and the potential impact of this partnership has already ben proved during the rental wetsuit procurement process for Lost Shore, where a lab testing process involving 9 different brands, has allowed Lost Shore to objectively select the warmest wetsuit for their customers, which happened to be Yulex made. After the purchase of almost 700 units of this natural rubber product, Lost Shore has the biggest plant based rental wetsuit fleet in the world and it is the first inland surf facility to do so.

However, we do not want to rest on our achievements and understand for every question answered, more emerge. If you, or your company, have a research proposal for consideration you can get in touch with the Surf Lab lead, Dr Brendon Ferrier.
